CHAPTER 13

On Monday after work, I made my way to the Stonemill German Christmas Market. The town had been originally founded by German immigrants, so it was an enormous affair. The market took over an entire park, with hundreds of stalls. Each year, the town constructed temporary buildings that were used as beer halls and oompah band concert venues.

The weather was cold, as expected, but the multicolored Christmas lights strewn around the park gave the market a very festive feel. I could hear a group of children singing “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” from the other side of the market.

They were extremely off-key, but it made me smile. I valued enthusiasm over talent when it came to caroling, and those kids were giving it their all.

Since it was a few weeks before Christmas, the place was crammed with shoppers. I found an empty spot on a stone wall and perched on it, near the old carousel.

The carousel was built sometime in the 1950s and hadn’t been touched since. Many of the horses were missing ears, some were cross-eyed, and the paint was flaking off in places.

I took off my gloves and sent Mark a quick text:

I’m near the merry-go-round. Come quick, these horses look sinister.
